Currently, there is only one medical entrance exam in India: NEET. NEET replaced AIPMT and all state-level PMTs. It is conducted in two categories: NEET-UG for undergraduate courses and NEET-PG for postgraduate courses. AIIMS and JIPMER no longer conduct their own undergraduate exams from 2020 onwards.

NEET UG is for admission to undergraduate medical courses such as MBBS and BDS, while NEET PG is for admission to postgraduate courses like MD and MS in medical colleges.

NEET (UG) is conducted once a year in pen-and-paper mode, typically in May by the National Testing Agency.

While AIPMT and NEET have similar patterns and syllabi, they are not exactly the same. AIPMT was an All-India level test for 15% of the seats in government medical colleges, with the remaining 85% filled through State PMTs. NEET is now the single entrance exam for 100% of seats in all medical colleges in India.

To qualify for NEET, students must have studied Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English in their class 12 (or equivalent) exams. The candidate must have passed these subjects and obtained at least 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology/Biotechnology combined

NEET-UG was first conducted in 2013. It was not held in 2014 and 2015 but was reintroduced in 2016 with two phases—NEET-I and NEET-II. Since then, NEET has been conducted annually for MBBS admissions.

NEET (UG) is conducted after class 12. Students who are appearing for their class 12 exams can also appear for NEET provisionally, provided they meet the eligibility criteria.

The main difference between PMT (Pre-Medical Test) and NEET is the scope and syllabus. PMTs were state-level exams for admission to medical colleges within individual states, with their own state-specific syllabi. In contrast, NEET is a national-level exam with a standardized syllabus, incorporating elements from CBSE, NCERT, and COBSE.
